Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Weißburgunder Pinot Blanc
Tasting Notes
Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Weißburgunder Pinot Blanc is a rare and highly elegant expression of the Pinot Blanc grape, crafted by a legendary, 300-year-old family estate in Germany’s prestigious Mosel region. While the estate dedicates 95% of its vineyards to Riesling, this specific wine is produced from a mere 5% plot of Weissburgunder vines. The vines are cultivated on a steep hillside composed of pebble-covered gray slate soils that date back to the last ice age. This distinctive cool-climate terroir allows for a slow grape ripening process, preserving the wine's vibrant freshness while imbuing it with a profound sense of place. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented with indigenous wild yeasts inside traditional, 10-year-old oak fuders (large barrels). This careful winemaking technique strikes a beautiful balance, imparting a subtle roundness without overshadowing the grape's pristine fruit profile.
On the nose, this bone-dry white wine opens with refreshing spring-like aromas of gooseberry, white currant, and ripe pear, layered with delicate hints of fresh green herbs, elderflower, and hay. The palate is slim, lean, and intensely elegant, showing off a vibrant but perfectly integrated Mosel acidity. Ripe orchard fruits transition beautifully into a creamy meltiness from the old oak barrel aging. The finish is remarkably structured and long-lasting, driven by a crisp, flinty slate-stone minerality that clearly distinguishes its unique Mosel origin from bolder, more muscular expressions found in other European regions.
Thanks to its moderate, harmonic acidity and structured body, this Pinot Blanc is an exceptionally versatile food companion. Its crisp profile cuts elegantly through rich textures, making it a perfect match for creamy pasta dishes, mushroom risottos, and vegetable tarts. It provides a spectacular foil for white meats like roast chicken, veal blanquette, or Wiener Schnitzel, and its distinctive mineral backbone sings alongside flaky white fish, garlic shrimp, and raw oysters. Additionally, its subtle herbal undertones make it one of the rare wines that pairs beautifully with seasonal green asparagus, as well as lighter summer salads and soft cheeses.
