Tasting Notes

The 2022 Paradigm Napa Valley Cabernet Franc is a premium, estate-grown red wine crafted by legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett at Paradigm Winery in the Oakville appellation. For this vintage, the varietal composition features a blend of 91% Cabernet Franc and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from a single vineyard and aged for 20 months in French oak barrels (50% new and 50% used). True to its varietal roots, Cabernet Franc acts as an ancient parent grape to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, bringing a signature structural profile marked by vibrant acidity, elegant weight, and classic herbal complexities. The 2022 growing season produced an incredibly limited run of just 436 cases, maintaining a lush mouthcoating texture balanced by the varietal’s natural, lively brightness.

In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant, deep ruby color. The expressive aromatics open with a concentrated bouquet of blueberry, elderberry, tea, and cedar, layered beautifully with savory undertones of rosemary, anise, black pepper, and shishito pepper. On the palate, the wine delivers a soft, lush mouthcoating sensation balanced by fine-grained, subtle tannins and a graceful tension. Vibrant flavors of tart cherry, cranberry, and dark cocoa give way to notes of graphite and earthy dried herbs. The finish is remarkably fresh, persistent, and juicy, leaving a lingering trail of mouthwatering acidity and savory spice.

Because of its balanced structure, savory herbal undertones, and elevated acidity, this Cabernet Franc pairs beautifully with rich, herb-infused meats and complex savory dishes. It is an exceptional match for a roasted rack of lamb with rosemary, garlic-butter filet mignon, or braised short ribs, as the wine's acid cuts through the fat while its herbal notes mirror the seasoning. It also complements gamey dishes like pan-seared duck breast or savory, earthy plates such as a wild mushroom risotto or an eggplant moussaka. For simpler pairings, consider serving it alongside charcuterie featuring artisanal salami, prosciutto, or aged, pungent cheeses like Gouda and blue cheese, which emphasize the wine's deep berry core and smooth finish.
