Olivier Coste Old Star Carignan Noir
The man behind this bottle, Olivier Coste, grew up among the vines and cellars of Domaine Montrose, his family’s estate founded in 1701 in Pézenas. His deep connection to the Languedoc landscape fuels a winemaking philosophy rooted in sustainability and authenticity. Coste’s low-intervention approach and respect for traditional bush-vine farming breathe new life into Carignan, once a “star” of the region, now reborn through his thoughtful lens.
Olivier Coste’s Old Star Carignan Noir is a soulful tribute to one of the Mediterranean’s most overlooked grapes, crafted with precision and reverence in the heart of Languedoc. Sourced from old bush vines rooted in stony Villafranchian soils near Tourbes, this 100% Carignan bottling showcases the grape’s rustic charm and vibrant energy. Fermented and aged in stainless steel to preserve purity, the wine opens with aromas of dark stewed fruit and spice, then unfolds into a juicy palate of baked plum, boysenberry, and candied cherry. Soft, lightly sticky tannins and buzzy acidity give it lift, while the finish lingers with cracked stones, pepper, and a touch of reduction.
