Michel Fonne 2023 "Tradition" Pinot Noir AOC Alsace

$ 2599 $ 2999

While most people will associate French Pinot Noir exclusively with Burgundy, the expressions emerging from Alsace offer a distinct and compelling alternative rooted in a different geological history. Where Burgundy is characterized by a relatively consistent focus on limestone and clay, Alsace features a complex mosaic of thirteen distinct soil types, including granite, volcanic rock, and sandstone, all sheltered by the rain-shadow of the Vosges Mountains. This creates a drier, sunnier environment that allows for a longer, more gradual ripening period. Stylistically, Alsace Pinot Noir tends to prioritize a crystalline purity of fruit and a vibrant, mineral-driven acidity over the earthy, forest-floor weight often found in the Côte d'Or. The result is a wine that is frequently fresher and more agile on the palate, offering a "vertical" structure that highlights the region’s unique terroir.

Domaine Michel Fonné, located in the village of Bennwihr, is directed by Michel Fonné, a Dijon-educated oenologist who brings a sophisticated, technical precision to his family’s historic estate (6 generations worth). After honing his craft in Champagne and California’s Alexander Valley, Michel took over the business from his uncle, René Barth, with a vision to elevate the estate's Pinot Noir production.

The 2023 Tradition is a remarkably precise and savory expression of the varietal. In the glass, it shows a bright garnet color with excellent clarity. The aromatics are dominated by tart red currants, wild cherries, and a subtle smokiness that is characteristic of the Bennwihr terroir. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and lean, featuring crunchy red fruit flavors supported by a fine-grained tannic structure and a persistent stony minerality. A delicate hint of spice and a light "gamey" undertone emerge on the mid-palate, leading to a clean, refreshing finish. It's also a great value as most Alsace Pinots we've come across of this quality are easily $35+!
