Tasting Notes

The 2021 Loveblock Pinot Noir is a premium expression of 100% Pinot Noir sourced primarily from the single organically farmed "Someone's Darling" vineyard, nestled on the Bendigo Loop Road in Central Otago, New Zealand. Celebrated winemakers Erica and Kim Crawford employ minimal-intervention winemaking techniques, utilizing free-draining sandy loam over schist gravel soils to extract maximum varietal purity and complex site expression. The wine presents a bright crimson appearance with purple hues and opens with an aromatic nose of ripe black cherry, wild strawberry, smoky notes, and hints of forest floor mushroom layered over toasty oak spice. On the medium-bodied palate, it delivers a fleshy core of black plum, cranberry, and maraschino cherry that harmonizes beautifully with notes of dried violets, white pepper, and savory baking spices like clove and nutmeg. It features a vibrant, crisp acidity and tightly wound, finely grained tannins that culminate in a long, silky finish marked by a lingering touch of malty Assam tea.
Thanks to its balanced tannin structure and bright acidity, this versatile red varietal offers exceptional flexibility at the dinner table. It serves as a classic match for roasted duck breast, herb-crusted rack of lamb, and lean beef dishes, where the rich meats perfectly mirror the wine's dark fruit and savory undertones. It pairs wonderfully with pan-seared salmon, roasted poultry like turkey, and earthy mushroom risotto or wild mushroom pasta, which highlight the wine's forest floor characteristics. For lighter pairings, try it with a beetroot and goat cheese salad or nutty cheeses like aged Gruyère and Comté to elevate the bottle's vibrant red-fruit core.

Leading the accolades, Wine Spectator awarded the vintage 93 points, praising its sleek core of maraschino cherry, raspberry, and cranberry flavors wrapped in elegant clove, nutmeg, and cardamom details. Wine Enthusiast rated it at 92 points, highlighting its distinctive, savory bouquet of cedar shavings, bay leaf, and tree sap juxtaposed against dense red and black fruit and tightly wound, chalky tannins.
