Tasting Notes

The Hugl Weine Grüner Veltliner is a bright, clear, pale-straw colored wine that opens with inviting, aromatic intensity. On the nose, it delivers fresh aromas of green pear, grapefruit, and lime zest, underscored by delicate hints of wildflowers, tarragon, and wet gravel. The palate is typically dry and medium-bodied, offering a juicy burst of crisp apple, green pear, and exotic tropical fruit layers. A firm, vibrant mineral backbone provides exceptional structure and tension, which carries through to a crisp, clean finish. True to its identity, the wine leaves a lingering finish marked by distinctive notes of freshly ground white pepper and citrus vibrancy.
Grüner Veltliner is the signature and most widely planted white wine grape in Austria, thriving exceptionally well in the Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) region where Hugl Weine is produced. The varietal is celebrated for its lean profile, high natural acidity, and low tannins, making it incredibly refreshing and highly adaptable. While young expressions are light, snappy, and bottled under screw caps to preserve their zesty freshness, the grape also possesses an aging potential similar to Riesling. As a high-yield, terroir-driven variety, its hallmark characteristic is a prominent herbaceous "lentil" or white pepper spice note derived from the compound rotundone found in the grape skins.
Thanks to its zesty acidity and subtle peppery lift, this wine serves as a phenomenal palate cleanser and an exceptionally versatile food partner. It shines brilliantly alongside traditional Austrian fare like Wiener Schnitzel or crisp American fried chicken, where the wine's tart profile effortlessly cuts through the rich, fried fats. It is famously one of the few wines capable of pairing with notoriously difficult green vegetables, matching beautifully with fresh asparagus, artichokes, and herb-forward salads. Additionally, its spicy undertones and crisp structure make it a natural fit for seafood dishes like pan-fried catfish, steamed shellfish, and sushi, as well as mildly spiced Asian cuisines such as Vietnamese or Thai.
