Six Reds for Cool Evenings and Holiday Gatherings
Six reds from family estates and dedicated growers, from Piedmont hillsides to the Patagonian steppe. In honor of our October spotlight on Spain and Portugal, three come from the Iberian Peninsula, along with a Cali Pinot Noir you can audition for Turkey Day next month, a regal Dolcetto and well structured Cab from Argentina. They run from bright and juicy to rich and warming, and every bottle has real people and a real place behind it. Each one over-delivers for the price.
Giapoza Pinot Noir (California)
The Pozzan family's wine roots go back to Piedmont in the late 1800s. Michael Pozzan's grandfather planted Zinfandel in Sonoma in 1948, and some of those vines still grow at the end of Pozzan Road in Healdsburg. Michael launched his own label in 1991 with just 200 cases, and today along with the help of his 2 sons and winemaker Molly Lippitt Lyman Pozzan makes a wide array of wine styles and pricepoints. Giapoza opens with an inviting perfume of rose petal and fresh raspberry, lifted by a bright twist of orange peel and a whisper of clove. On the palate, ripe red plum and raspberry lead into darker notes of black fig, with a dusting of cocoa. Ten months in French oak add a gentle frame of nutmeg and vanilla without covering the fruit. The texture is the star: broad, silky and supple, with soft tannins that make it easy to enjoy from the first sip to the last.
Casa E. di Mirafiore Dolcetto d'Alba (Piedmont, Italy)
Mirafiore is an Italian winery with royal pedigree. It was founded in 1878 by Emanuele Alberto Guerrieri, Count of Mirafiore and son of Italy's first king, who built a whole village for his vineyard workers in Serralunga d'Alba. Today the estate makes wine only from its own vineyards and has been certified organic since 2018. In the glass it's a deep ruby with violet highlights. The nose is pure Piedmont: fresh violets, blueberry and black cherry, with a savory sprig of rosemary. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and clean, with black cherry joined by hints of black tea and a bright flicker of lemon peel. It stays agreeably dry, with soft tannins and the classic Dolcetto signature: a gentle, lingering note of bitter almond on the finish.
Freire Lobo "Vigno" Dão Tinto (Dão, Portugal)
This is the red sibling of the Vigno Branco in our white case. Elisa Freire Lobo, the first woman to set up as a winemaker in the Dão, farms her family's 15-hectare estate organically near the Serra da Estrela mountains, with sheep grazing the vineyards in winter. Vigno Tinto blends Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and a little Tinta Roriz from 40- to 60-year-old vines on granite. It's fermented with native yeasts, some whole clusters, and no oak. It's silky and medium-bodied, with wild strawberry, black cherry, violets and pink peppercorn, plus a fresh mineral finish.
Ressò Garnacha (Catalunya, Spain)
Cellar Josep Masachs is best known for Cava. When they found a source of old-vine Garnacha in Terra Alta, a high, dry, windswept corner of western Catalunya near the town of Gandesa, they couldn't resist. The harsh conditions keep yields low and the fruit concentrated. The nose is floral and generous, with crushed violets, candied strawberry and black raspberry, and hints of licorice and anise. On the palate, ripe blackberry takes the lead, framed by black pepper and a distinctive mineral, almost graphite-like edge that speaks to the rugged terrain. Full and round, with velvety tannins, it finishes long and mineral-driven, balancing ripe Mediterranean fruit with a savory backbone.
Carchelo Monastrell (Jumilla, Spain)
Bodegas Carchelo sits at about 700 meters at the foot of the Sierra del Carche in Jumilla, Spain's Monastrell heartland. It was founded in 1989, and the Sierva family continues the work today. This 100% organic Monastrell opens with brambly red and black berries and ripe red plum, with a floral, potpourri-like lift, warm spice and a savory balsamic note. Fermented in stainless steel and aged five months in French oak, it is juicy and smooth on the palate, medium-bodied, with dark cherry and black fruit wrapped in soft, rounded tannins. Wild Mediterranean herbs linger alongside the fruit on a fresh, dry finish.
Familia Schroeder "Alpataco" Cabernet Sauvignon (Patagonia, Argentina)
Familia Schroeder planted vines in 2002 in San Patricio del Chañar, a frontier wine region in Patagonia with only a handful of wineries. While they were building the winery, the family uncovered dinosaur fossils, a reminder of just how far off the beaten path this place is. Their 120 hectares are certified organic, and the grapes are hand-harvested. The nose is complex and inviting, with ripe red fruit, a lively crack of black pepper and a subtle hint of vanilla from partial aging in French and American oak. On the palate, it shows the structure you expect from Cabernet, balanced by the freshness that Patagonia's cool desert nights provide. It's a Cabernet with backbone and energy rather than heaviness, with the fruit and spice carrying through to a clean, persistent finish.
