Tasting Notes

Winemaker Greg Brewer is one of California's most respected Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers (he was Wine Enthusiast's Winemaker of the year for 2020). His Brewer-Clifton label has been a darling of critics and wine lovers everywhere since it was first released in 1996. In 2005 he created Diatom where he seeks to capture and express the beauty of Chardonnay in its most pure and unadulterated state.

Diatom is named for diatomaceous earth, which is a plankton fossil found in the oceanic landscape of Santa Barbara County. The wines are made without any malolactic fermentation or oak barrel influences and made in the classic style of early Napa Valley style of the 1970's and 1980's of wineries like Cakebread, Chateau Montelena, Stony Hill, Shafer, Far Niente, Stag’s Leap... the wines won the 1976 Judgment of Paris Tasting and that helped make Napa famous around the world.

Diatom’s 2024 Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is a study in purity and precision, opening with lifted aromas of lemon zest, green apple, and white peach layered over cool coastal notes of sea spray and crushed shells. On the palate, it is sleek and linear, driven by vibrant acidity and a crystalline texture that highlights its unoaked, minimalist style. Flavors of citrus blossom, lime leaf, and subtle melon glide across a taut frame, finishing long, saline, and refreshingly dry. The wine’s clarity and tension make it both invigorating and quietly complex, showcasing the cool‑climate elegance that defines Diatom.
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with dishes that echo its brightness and clean profile. Fresh oysters, crudo, ceviche, and lightly grilled white fish all complement its saline edge. It also shines alongside sushi, goat cheese salads, roasted chicken with lemon and herbs, and vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel, or spring greens. Its brisk acidity and lack of oak make it especially versatile with delicate or citrus‑driven preparations.
