The 2020 Alto Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold, full-bodied single-cultivar red wine from the historic Stellenbosch region of South Africa, displaying a polished and deep crimson red color in the glass. On the nose, it delivers an intense and complex bouquet of cassis, dark plum, and tobacco leaf, beautifully layered with smoky minerality, savory fynbos, and a subtle hint of cinnamon oak spice. The palate is silky smooth yet intensely concentrated, offering vibrant flavors of red and black cherries, fresh blackberry, and a firm graphite edge. This wine is exceptionally well-structured with a lively acidity and a strong backbone, leading into a long, dry finish defined by firm, complex tannins that provide a deep grip and signal excellent aging potential for the next 5 to 10 years.
As a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine showcases the exceptional terroir of the Helderberg "Golden Triangle," where vines are planted on north-west facing slopes of decomposed granite and clay, cooled by maritime breezes from False Bay. The wine was matured for 18 months in a combination of first-, second-, and third-fill French oak barrels, resulting in an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 14.5%, a total acidity of 5.9 g/l, and a pH of 3.65. Because of its robust body and firm tannin profile, this Cabernet Sauvignon pairs magnificently with rich, heavy dishes that can cut through its structure. It is an ideal match for premium red meats like grilled ribeye steak, beef fillet, and lamb chops, as well as hearty stews, oxtail, or roasted venison. For alternative pairings, it complements mature, hard cheeses like aged Cheddar and Gouda, or even meaty game fish such as grilled yellowtail and seared tuna.
