Concha y Toro may be a recognizable brand found in just about every grocery store around the world, Don Melchor is their answer to the question "can Chile make a wine that stands with the best of Bordeaux and Napa (Think Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One)?" The 2019 vintage says yes, emphatically. It comes from a single vineyard in Puente Alto, at the foot of the Andes in the Upper Maipo Valley, where roughly 80% of the vines are ungrafted, growing on their own roots from pre-phylloxera Bordeaux massal selection material brought over in the 1880s. That's a detail most Napa and Bordeaux estates simply cannot claim. Winemaker Enrique Tirado still makes the annual pilgrimage to Bordeaux to benchmark the blend against the best in the world, and it shows: this is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, built on rocky alluvial soils with big diurnal swings that give the fruit real structure and lift.

Wine Enthusiast awarded it 95 points, highlighting its concentration, elegance, and long, expressive finish, while Wine Spectator rated it 94 points, noting its depth, polish, and impressive aging potential. Critics across major publications emphasized the wine’s harmony, aromatic clarity, and architectural structure, establishing the 2019 Don Melchor as one of the standout vintages in the modern history of this iconic Chilean Cabernet.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Don Melchor opens with layered aromas of cassis, blackberry, plum, violets, graphite, cedar, and subtle tobacco leaf. On the palate it is full‑bodied yet refined, showing dark berry fruit, cocoa, fresh herbs, and finely textured tannins supported by vibrant acidity. The blend is anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon with small portions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, each contributing aromatic lift, mid‑palate richness, and structural complexity. Its balance and depth make it an excellent partner for grilled ribeye, lamb chops, braised short ribs, roasted duck, mushroom ragù, and aged cheeses, where the wine’s structure and freshness complement richness and umami‑driven dishes.
