Michel Vattan 2024 "M-K" Sancerre
The Cuvée M-K from Michel Vattan provides an enlightening look at how specific soil compositions dictate the structure of great Sancerre. The "M-K" designation references Marnes Kimméridgiennes, the Kimmeridgian marl formations prominent in the steeply sloped vineyards of Maimbray, a hamlet within Sury-en-Vaux. These ancient, clay-rich soils are packed with fossilized oyster shells, yielding a much heavier, more powerful, and structured wine compared to those grown on lighter limestone gravel.
The 2024 release channels this distinct terroir with incredible intensity from the first swirl, bursting with pink grapefruit, lime leaf, gooseberry, and white peach, underscored by secondary layers of white flowers and a subtle, smoky mineral complexity. What sets this cuvée apart is its remarkable structural harmony; the driving, high-toned acid backbone is perfectly counterbalanced by a substantive, mouth-filling texture derived from the Kimmeridgian clay. This weight extends through a long, intensely savory finish, offering a level of depth that guarantees it will evolve beautifully for several years.
