Domaine René Leclerc consists of thirty acres in and around Gevrey-Chambertin; the domaine produces a number of premier cru wines as well as a village wine and an outstanding Bourgogne Rouge. In recent years René has gradually handed over the winemaking and management of the domaine to his son François, who is a traditionalist like his father and who brings personal experience from his work in Oregon vineyards and his own vision of what the domaine can achieve. The domaine is known for its old vines, most between fifty and eighty years of age, and for the lush, fruity style of its wines. Leclerc uses barrels that are between thirty and fifty years old, which, as one of his importers has remarked, takes the concept of “neutral” to a whole new level. This Bourgogne Rouge is textbook old-school-style French Pinot Noir, elegant and beguiling, with blackberry and dark strawberry fruit wrapped around a core of earthy spice and vibrant acidity.
