Some really fun stuff in this latest Great Value Mixed Case, including new vintages of some old favorites.
Martino Cabernet Franc (Mendoza) - A polished, old-school expression of the Cabernet Franc, grown at high altitudes in Luján de Cuyo and Maipú. Deep red with crimson highlights, it opens with aromas of black fruit, red pepper, and spice, layered with savory notes of cigar box, polished leather, and coffee—a nod to its restrained oak aging and traditional winemaking style. On the palate, it’s smooth and balanced, with flavors of dark chocolate, vanilla, and ripe blackberry, supported by gentle tannins and a long, unctuous finish. The wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation and sees a light touch of wood to enhance mouthfeel without overwhelming its varietal purity. Ideal with grilled meats, aged cheeses, or herb-laced stews, this Cabernet Franc offers depth and elegance at a compelling value.
Medusa Baga/Touriga Nacional (Portugal) - The Medusa Red from Portugal’s Bairrada region is a bold yet approachable blend of Baga and Touriga Nacional, showcasing the depth and character of these native grapes. Deep ruby in color, it opens with intense aromas of ripe red fruits—think cherry and plum—layered with subtle toasted notes from oak aging. On the palate, it’s harmonious and persistent, offering a pleasant volume and smooth texture that balances fruit richness with earthy undertones. The Baga lends structure and acidity, while Touriga Nacional contributes floral lift and depth. Best served slightly cool (60-65 degrees), it pairs beautifully with pasta, grilled salmon, or white meats, making it a versatile choice for both casual meals and more refined pairings.
Lomas del Marques Rioja (Spain) - A youthful, fruit-driven expression of Tempranillo, designed for immediate enjoyment rather than long aging. It pours a vibrant ruby hue and opens with fresh aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and subtle spice, with just a whisper of oak influence to round out the edges. On the palate, it’s smooth, medium-bodied, and easygoing, with soft tannins and a clean finish that leans into red fruit and a touch of earthiness. This style is ideal for casual pairings—think grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or manchego and jamón—and offers classic Rioja character without the weight or wood of a reserva bottlings, perfect for summertime refreshment.
Les Volets Pinot Noir (France) - From France’s Haute Vallée de l’Aude is a serious yet approachable expression of cool-climate Pinot, grown in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It pours a bright ruby red and opens with aromas of freshly picked raspberries, cherry, and a subtle savory leesiness. On the palate, it delivers fleshy red fruit and jam, supported by fine tannins and juicy acidity, giving it both lift and structure. Aged in large, old oak barrels, the wine gains texture without overt woodiness, preserving its purity and freshness. It’s delicious on its own or paired with herby sausage casserole, grilled lamb, and is also great served slightly cool—around 61–64°F.
Cave la Comtadine Cotes du Rhone (France) - The Comtadine Côtes du Rhône is a classic Southern Rhône blend—80% Grenache and 20% Syrah—crafted by a respected cooperative known for delivering quality at value-driven prices. It pours a ruby red and opens with a nose of red plum, blackberry, and cherry, accented by subtle herbal and peppery notes. On the palate, it’s plump, juicy, and rounded, with flavors of dark cherry, black plum, and spice, supported by medium tannins and a smooth, fruity finish. This wine is versatile and food-friendly, pairing well with grilled meats, red-sauced pasta, or even tuna, and works equally well as a casual aperitif. A solid everyday Rhône that punches above its price point.
Trentadue "OPR" Old Patch Red (California) - Not wanting to neglect our fans of fuller bodied reds in this mixed case we finish off with Trentadue's OPR a bold, fruit-forward California blend that channels old-vine character with modern drinkability. Composed primarily of Zinfandel (55%), with Petite Sirah (27%), Carignane (17%), and a touch of Sangiovese, it pours a deep ruby and opens with intense aromas of black cherry, blueberry, and cherry cola, followed by hints of ripe plum, vanilla, cocoa, and toasted oak. On the palate, it’s juicy and plush, with soft tannins and a youthful brightness that makes it both approachable and satisfying. Aged for 11 months in a mix of new and neutral French and American oak, it finishes long and fruity with subtle notes of dark licorice and chocolate. This is a versatile red that pairs beautifully with barbecue, burgers, or hearty pasta, but it’s also enjoyable on its own.
