Tasting Notes

The 2018 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon is a highly acclaimed, full-bodied icon wine hailing from the Andes-cooled terroir of the Puente Alto vineyard in Chile's Alto Maipo Valley. Widely recognized as an exceptional, highly-rated vintage, it exhibits a deep garnet-red color and a complex, expressive nose that unfolds in layers with intense aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, and sour cherry. These fruit notes are intricately accented by elegant undertones of graphite, leather, cedar, mint, wild herbs, and a subtle whiff of roasted coffee bean oak. On the palate, the wine delivers great concentration, balance, and a lively, vibrant acidity that beautifully frames its fine-grained, polished tannins, culminating in a remarkably long, refined, and savory finish.

In terms of varietal composition, this specific vintage is a meticulous Bordeaux-style blend consisting of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. This composition marks one of the few instances where winemaker Enrique Tirado utilized all four Bordeaux varieties grown on the estate to enhance the final composition's nuance and overall architectural grip. Structurally, its fine tannins and deep umami characteristics demand robust food pairings. It pairs beautifully with roasted or stewed red meats, particularly lamb and wild game prepared with rosemary, mushrooms, and rich red wine reductions. It is also exceptionally well-suited for truffled turkey terrines, pâtés, and a diverse range of dry, mature, or creamy cow and goat cheeses.
