The Steinert vineyard is situated in the high hills of the Eden’s Flaxman’s Valley and contains some of the most prized and ancient vines of the Barossa. These historic, dry-grown, rod and spur pruned vines have now passed 120 years of age. The Steinert family still own the vineyard to this day.

Sweet and deeply concentrated, offering palate-staining black and blue fruit, exotic spice and candied violet flavors that show superb definition and are supported by a spine of smoky minerality. For this wine's depth and power, it's almost shockingly graceful. From vines more than 120 years old at the higher altitudes in the Eden Valley, this wine is gorgeously balanced and open right from the get go. The pure brambly fruit swirls with notes of licorice, baking spice, cracked pepper, black olive and the pan scrapings of a roast. The cooler climes really show on the palate where pristine acidity lifts the fruit to tangy territory, giving a linear shape to the wine. The tannins are chalky, spicy and superbly integrated. This could age until 2050... at least.

Eden Valley Shiraz can reach heady heights of bacon fat, blueberries and graphite, in a single fell swoop. It’s the fruit, not the oak, that takes us there and what denes the best. The trick is the inherent balance of freshness and exoticism in the mouth. The Steinert vineyard (480 meters in elevation) in Flaxman’s Valley is more than 130+ years old and was once an old Rockford vineyard. Low yielding at one ton to the acre, the wine was matured for 20-24 months in oak. This 2017 Steinert Flaxman’s Shiraz is spicy and very long. The oak is still prominent, but the fruit has an opulence and plushness beneath it that shows the longevity of the wine. This has not reached its first peak yet.
